Riot Before Lyra McKee’s Murder Was ‘Staged Show Of Force’, Court Told
A court in Belfast has heard that the riot which unfolded on the night Lyra McKee was murdered may have been deliberately staged as a show of force.
The claim emerged during the ongoing trial linked to the events of April 18, 2019, when the 29-year-old journalist was shot dead while observing unrest in the Creggan area of Derry.
Prosecution arguments presented to the court stated the violence that night, including petrol bomb attacks and gunfire directed at police Land Rovers, may not have been spontaneous. Instead, it was described as a coordinated display intended to send a message and generate propaganda.
Lyra McKee was standing near police vehicles in the Fanad Drive area when a masked gunman fired shots toward officers. One of those bullets struck her, and she died shortly afterwards.
The court is hearing evidence against a number of men facing charges connected to the events of that night. Three defendants are accused of murder along with firearms offences, while others face charges including rioting and throwing petrol bombs. All have denied the charges.
Prosecutors allege that individuals involved in the disorder may have played roles in encouraging or assisting the gunman, forming part of what is being described as a coordinated sequence of events rather than an isolated outbreak of violence.
Responsibility for the shooting was later claimed by Dissident Republicans, who stated that Lyra McKee was not the intended target.
Her killing sent shockwaves across Northern Ireland/The North. A journalist known for her work examining the legacy of the Troubles, she had been covering the unrest when her life was cut short in front of witnesses.
What is now being argued in court goes beyond the shooting itself. It suggests the conditions that night may have been created deliberately, turning what appeared to be disorder into something more organised and calculated.
For many, that raises serious questions about the true nature of what unfolded in Creggan, and whether the violence that led to her death was part of something planned.
