Dissident Republican Group 32CSM To Hold 1916 Commemoration In Derry This Weekend

Dissident Republican Group 32CSM To Hold 1916 Commemoration In Derry This Weekend

A dissident republican group, the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM), is set to hold a commemoration in Derry to mark the 110th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

The event will take place in Derry city this weekend and is expected to follow a traditional format, including a “Republic Day” wreath-laying ceremony and an oration.

While most Easter Rising commemorations were held earlier in April, this event is being staged separately, reflecting the group’s own calendar of remembrance and political messaging.

The 1916 Rising, which began on April 24, 1916, remains one of the most significant events in Irish history and continues to be marked annually by republican groups across Ireland.

Events organised by dissident republican groups are typically held independently of mainstream commemorations and often carry a distinct political message, emphasising opposition to current political arrangements and promoting their position on Irish sovereignty.

The 32CSM has previously used such commemorations to underline those views, combining acts of remembrance with political statements.

Derry has long been a focal point for republican commemorations, with events drawing participants and supporters from across the region.

Holding commemorations outside the main Easter weekend is not unusual, with different groups marking the anniversary at various points throughout April.

The planned event is expected to attract attention given the wider context surrounding similar gatherings.

Previous dissident republican commemorations have, at times, been followed by disorder involving small groups of youths, including incidents of road disruption and petrol bombs.

The question now is whether this weekend’s event will pass without incident, although at this stage there is no indication that any such issues are expected.

More than a century on, the legacy of the 1916 Rising continues to be marked in different ways, reflecting ongoing divisions within republicanism.
