Heartbroken family seeks safety changes after fatal accident at Belderrig Pier in Mayo

A recent tragic incident at Belderrig Pier in County Mayo has led to calls for enhanced safety measures, resonating with communities across Northern Ireland/The North. On February 18, Joachim McNulty, a 64-year-old local farmer and fisherman, lost his life when his vehicle lost traction on the algae-covered surface of the pier and entered the sea. Emergency services pronounced him deceased at the scene.

In the aftermath of the accident, McNulty’s family has expressed their profound grief and is advocating for immediate changes to improve safety at the pier. They are urging local authorities to implement measures that could prevent similar incidents in the future. The family believes that enhancing safety protocols could protect others who frequent the pier for fishing and various activities.

The concerns raised by McNulty’s family are not isolated, as similar issues regarding safety at coastal locations have been highlighted in Northern Ireland/The North. The tragic event has sparked discussions about the need for better safety measures in public spaces, particularly those that are frequented by the public for recreational purposes. Local officials are expected to conduct a review of the circumstances surrounding the accident and consider the family’s request for improved safety protocols.
