Former PIRA Bomber and MLA Martina Anderson Says Botched Prison Surgery Left Her Unable to Have Children

Former Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has said that botched surgery carried out while she was in prison left her unable to have children.

Ms Anderson, a former Provisional IRA member who later became a prominent political figure, made the claim in relation to medical treatment she received while serving a prison sentence in England.

She said the procedure, carried out during her time in custody, had lifelong consequences and robbed her of the chance to have children.

The former MLA described the experience as deeply traumatic, stating that the impact of the surgery has stayed with her throughout her life.

Ms Anderson was jailed in the 1980s for her role in PIRA activity, including involvement in a bombing campaign in England. She later became a senior Sinn Féin figure, serving as an MLA and MEP.

In her account, she said the medical intervention was carried out in circumstances where she had little control, and that the outcome was something she only fully came to understand over time.

She has raised concerns about the standard of care provided and the long-term consequences of the procedure.

The claims have prompted renewed attention on medical treatment within the prison system during the conflict period, particularly in relation to female prisoners.

No legal findings were outlined in relation to the claim, and it is presented as Ms Anderson’s account of her experience.

Background

Martina Anderson was convicted in 1986 for involvement in PIRA activity and served time in prison in England before being released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

She later became a prominent Sinn Féin politician, representing Derry and serving in both the Northern Ireland Assembly and the European Parliament.

The treatment of prisoners during the conflict, including access to medical care, has been the subject of ongoing debate and scrutiny.

Issues relating to women prisoners, in particular, have received increasing attention in recent years.

Current Status

Ms Anderson has publicly raised the issue, highlighting the long-term personal impact of the alleged botched surgery.

There has been no indication of legal proceedings arising from the claim at this stage.

The issue is likely to contribute to wider discussion around prisoner treatment and legacy issues linked to the conflict.
