A man who attempted to sexually assault a 13-year-old girl during a flight operated by easyJet has been convicted following a court hearing that detailed the disturbing events that unfolded mid-air.
The court was told the passenger had consumed a significant amount of alcohol before and during the journey when his behaviour towards the young girl became increasingly inappropriate.
Passengers seated nearby became concerned after noticing the man’s conduct and alerted members of the cabin crew. Airline staff quickly intervened, separating the man from the child and ensuring the girl was protected while the situation was brought under control.
Crew members then followed aviation safety procedures designed to handle serious incidents on aircraft, including notifying authorities ahead of the plane’s arrival.
When the flight landed, police boarded the aircraft and arrested the suspect.
During the trial, prosecutors outlined how the man’s actions amounted to attempted sexual assault, emphasising that the victim was a child and that the incident took place in the confined environment of an aircraft cabin where passengers have limited ability to escape or seek immediate assistance.
Witnesses who had been seated nearby gave statements describing the events, while the actions of the flight crew were highlighted as crucial in preventing the situation from escalating further.
Airlines maintain strict rules regarding passenger behaviour on board flights, particularly concerning alcohol consumption and the safety of other passengers.
Serious offences committed on aircraft can be prosecuted under criminal law once the plane lands, and offenders can face arrest, court proceedings and potential travel bans from airlines.
Authorities say the conviction demonstrates that crimes committed during flights will be treated with the same seriousness as offences carried out on the ground.
For the young victim and her family, the incident has been described as an extremely distressing experience that occurred during what should have been a routine journey.
The man has now been found guilty of attempted sexual assault and will face sentencing at a later hearing.
