Derry MLA demands urgent action as NI records highest ED death rate

Derry MLA Mark H Durkan has called for urgent action regarding the escalating crisis in Northern Ireland’s Emergency Departments (EDs) after a report revealed the highest death rate in the region’s EDs. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) highlighted alarming conditions, including overcrowding that has led to children sleeping on floors in some facilities.

Durkan, representing the SDLP in Foyle, emphasized the need for dignity and proper care for patients facing these dire circumstances. He stated that the current state of emergency services is unacceptable and poses significant risks to public health.

The report from the RCEM indicates that Northern Ireland’s EDs are operating beyond capacity, contributing to increased mortality rates. Durkan’s comments reflect growing concerns among healthcare professionals and the public regarding the adequacy of emergency medical services in the region.

In light of these findings, Durkan has urged the Northern Ireland Executive to prioritize healthcare funding and resources to address the crisis. He stressed that immediate action is necessary to ensure that patients receive the care they need without facing the indignity of inadequate facilities.

The situation has sparked discussions among local health authorities and community leaders, who are calling for comprehensive reforms to improve the functioning of emergency services. The MLA’s call to action aims to mobilize support for a more effective healthcare system that can respond to the needs of the population.

As the crisis continues, the implications for patient safety and overall public health in Northern Ireland are becoming increasingly serious. The community is looking for a commitment from the government to resolve these pressing issues in the healthcare sector.
