Horror as man in 30s dies after fire at Belfast hospital's A&E department

Emergency services responded to a fire at the Royal Victoria Hospital’s Accident and Emergency department in Belfast on Wednesday evening, resulting in the death of a man in his 30s. The incident occurred shortly after 8 PM, prompting a swift response from firefighters and medical personnel.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and worked to extinguish the blaze, which caused significant disruption within the hospital. It is alleged that the fire started in a treatment area, although the exact cause remains under investigation.

The man, who was a patient at the hospital, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire. A spokesperson for the police stated that they are working closely with fire service investigators to determine the cause and any potential safety concerns.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the emergency department, and hospital staff were evacuated as a precaution. The Royal Victoria Hospital has confirmed that it is cooperating fully with the investigation and has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

The incident has raised questions about fire safety protocols within healthcare facilities in Northern Ireland/The North. Local representatives have called for a thorough review of emergency procedures to ensure the safety of patients and staff in the future.

As investigations continue, the hospital remains open, but some services may be affected as a result of the fire. Further updates are expected as authorities gather more information.
