Two Men Face Terrorism Charges Over PSNI Data Breach Fallout
Two men have appeared before a court in Northern Ireland/The North charged with terrorism-related offences linked to the PSNI data breach that exposed the personal details of thousands of officers and staff.
The case centres on allegations that material connected to the breach was in the possession of the accused, with prosecutors claiming it could be of use to those involved in terrorism.
The breach, which occurred in 2023, saw the names and details of more than 10,000 PSNI personnel mistakenly released online following a Freedom of Information response. It was immediately described as one of the most serious security failures in the history of policing in Northern Ireland/The North.
At the time, senior officers warned that dissident republican groups could seek to exploit the data, raising concerns for the safety of those named.
The court heard that the charges relate specifically to the alleged handling and possession of information linked to that breach, rather than the breach itself.
Details of the evidence were not fully outlined during the initial hearing, but the case is understood to form part of a wider investigation into how the leaked data may have been accessed, shared or retained.
Both men appeared before the court to face the charges and the case is now moving through the legal process.
No findings of guilt have been made, and the accused remain before the courts.
The fallout from the PSNI data breach continues to be felt, with ongoing concerns around accountability, security and the long-term impact on officers and staff whose details were exposed.
The case underlines how the consequences of that breach are still unfolding, with legal proceedings now beginning to address what happened after the information entered the public domain.
