Man Charged Over Social Media Threats Against DUP MLA Trevor Clarke
A Co Antrim man has been charged in connection with alleged threatening social media posts directed at DUP MLA Trevor Clarke, a court has heard.
The case centres on a series of online messages allegedly posted by Andrew Moran, which were reported to police and are now before the courts.
During the hearing, it was alleged that Moran referred to Clarke as a “touting rat” in posts made on social media, language which was presented in court as part of the prosecution case.
The messages are understood to have been directed at the MLA in his capacity as a public representative, with the issue brought to the attention of police before charges were brought.
The court heard that the alleged posts formed part of a wider pattern of online activity, with the content considered serious enough to result in prosecution.
Clarke, a DUP MLA, has previously stood in elections and remains an active figure in political life in Northern Ireland/The North.
At this stage, the case remains before the courts and no findings of guilt have been made.
Cases involving threats against elected representatives are treated with particular seriousness, given the potential impact on public life and democratic participation.
The rise in online abuse directed at politicians has become an increasing concern in recent years, with many representatives reporting intimidation linked to their roles.
The case will now proceed through the legal system, with further hearings expected.
